Critical engagement with issues of race and ethnicity is essential to an understanding of the world of the 21st century. Ethnic Studies programs prepare students to live in a multiracial and multicultural world by understanding how race and ethnicity shape an individual's identity and life chances.

Our programs and courses provide a context where students interested in examining the constructs of race and ethnicity from an interdisciplinary perspective can engage each other in dialogue and collaboration. With respect, seriousness and substance, students and faculty pursue a rigorous intellectual space to explore the social, historical and cultural consequences of social difference.

The United States is immersed in a political and economic environment where race and ethnicity consistently emerge in policy debates at the local, state, and federal levels. Issues such as affordable housing, education, health care, incarceration, immigration, and economic development in poor communities are all critical community issues that deal intrinsically with the study of race and ethnicity.

The Undergraduate Program in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity’s four academic majors offer a broad course of study of race and ethnicity in the United States and the larger world through engagement with the material and the disciplinary concerns of anthropology, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, religion, and literature among others. These programs not only provide an understanding of the rich history of ethnic and racial diversity from multiple perspectives, but it also provides the tools and knowledge necessary to address issues of race, ethnicity, nationality and inequality concretely and intelligently.

No matter your major or future plans, the programs in the Undergraduate Program in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity will provide intellectual skills and cultural knowledge that will benefit you. The majors and minors help students prepare for an increasingly diversified workplace and a globalized economy. Challenged to think critically and urged to write persuasively and thoughtfully, students will enhance their capacity for innovative analysis and creative problem solving.
