How to Declare
If you are considering a major or minor in any of our study areas, we encourage you to come in and discuss the possibility as early as possible. Meeting with a faculty advisor or student services officer can help you understand your options, and can alert you to opportunities such as upcoming events and course offerings.
Remember, the earlier you declare, the MORE options you have to
- Participate in the life of the CCSRE community;
- Take the courses you really want;
- Study abroad or at Stanford in Washington;
- Take time off or graduate early;
- Complete a minor, second major, or co-term.
Mailing Lists

Steps to Declare
If you’ve made the decision to declare, congratulations! Please follow these steps:
- Read the requirements for your planned major or minor:
Asian American Studies: Major - Minor
Chicana/o Studies: Major - Minor
Comparative Studies: Major or Minor
Native American Studies: Major - Minor
- Make an appointment to meet with the Student and Academic Services Coordinator, Margarita Ibarra, in Building 360, Room 361F. She can help you select a faculty advisor, provide a list of current and projected core and thematic courses, and get you started on the appropriate declaration form (all forms are excel spreadsheets):
Asian American Studies: Major template - Minor template
Chicana/o Studies: Major template - Minor template
Comparative Studies: Major template - Minor declaration template
Native American Studies: Major template - Minor template
- Make an appointment to meet with your advisor. In this initial meeting discuss your interests and ideas and be prepared to discuss major and/or minor requirements and opportunities. It is smart to have reviewed the approved course offerings and to have developed a proposed course of study to fulfill the major requirements.
- Meet with your advisor again and bring the appropriate (and completed) declaration form to be signed.
- Bring your signed declaration form and the freshman folder from your previous advisor to the CSRE Undergraduate Program office (Building 360, Room 361F).
- Declare on Axess. The Registrar’s Office will forward your request to CSRE for department approval. After verifying steps 1-4 have been completed, your declaration will be approved and your will receive notification via the Registrar.
